Musings on my art jaunt yesterday

I remain committed to the young galleries here in Chicago, but appreciate greatly the oomph and often, intellectual challenge a gallerist like Donald Young can provide.  While basically underwhelmed by my viewings this month at the usual West Loop galleries I frequent, I luckily was able to gain a bit more balance and engagement at Young, where I was immersed quickly in Cristina Iglesias' exhibition.  To say that these silkscreened panels, installed in the main gallery, are captivating is to be less than forthcoming, I think.  They are chilly, undulating representations of exterior objects, that feel both interior and psychological when visually probed.  Each copper plate seems to simultaneously expose and hide space.  Coming closer to each installation proved revealing, but only so much so; the surface seemed to expose the object, while the image itself was opaque.  I left the main gallery in thought, and surprisingly, at peace.  It made up for the freneticism and confusion I had just experienced looking at other works in the hour beforehand.
